Since the last season, we have become more closely acquainted with natural dyeing by travelling across the country and practising it ourselves for about one and a half years. In the process, we found a book from the Calico Museum in Ahmedabad, published in 1987, which documents how natural dyeing has been practised in different regions of India, with exact, specific ratios that we sometimes refer to alongside what dyers show us in person.




As we move between regions, natural dye artisans continue to teach us new ways of working with the same ingredients, as each region has its own approach to the same colours. Our own dyeing work is quite irregular, and for more solid colours it often results in slightly patchy outcomes, which we accept as part of the process. For textiles that need a more uniform effect, we work with master dyers, including some who are fifth‑generation dyers, who are able to use the same materials to produce even tones.
