These buttons are a continuation of two ongoing explorations: natural dyeing on wood and our indian mud dyeing process. We had previously worked with ebonised and rust dyed wooden buttons. This takes that further by applying the same iron, tannin, and red mud process we developed for fabric, onto wood.
The wood reacts differently than fibre. It absorbs the iron and tannin at varying rates depending on grain density, so the final tone is never uniform. The mud adds the same earthy, reddish warmth it contributes on fabric, but on wood it settles into the grain and creates a more mineral, stone like surface. Each button registers the process slightly differently.
