While experimenting with our natural dyeing process, we noticed how a minor mistake give us blue dye result, even though we were not using any Indigo. We were using Iron and Myrobalan, and gallnut to dye grey. 

Conventionally, indigo is the primary ingredient used to dye blue. But indigo never reacts with the fibre. It sits on top of the fibers, which is why it lightens over time. 


The myrobalan, gallnut and iron instead, react with the fibre, producing a blue that gets greyer with time.

We call it False Indigo. A jacket we originally made in a False Indigo dyed canvas is now almost grey.
